I don't know what it is, Paul's original Sovereign didn't have this component drift, so I'm not understanding why your modification does.

In any case, I appreciate the effort but like I said I can't use the OBJ. Look at the difference between the two. The OBJ's saucer texture loads very differently than the 3DS, but the 3DS one is the correct one; the OBJ UV mapping isn't even close to broadcast-quality.

We've got to figure out a way to fix this problem. I don't really know Max that well though, so my usefulness is limited. Do me a favor, upload the original Max 2012 scene and I'll see what I can do with it.

You learn every day. I'm not really good with textures and such but i'm willing to keep trying. BTW i did nothing with the textures in the mesh so it must be a conversion problem.

Here's the 2012 version + 3ds. I had no problems reimporting the 3ds again.

I put out a call for help on just about every 3DS Max forum I could find, hopefully someone somewhere knows how to fix this problem. Meantime let's see what I can do with this new scene. Thanks for this!

The 3DS you enclosed shows the same component drift that mine did when I tried it. But I think I may have stumbled on the answer, and it looks like you were close: instead of setting the pivot points to the center of the object, it looks like the right answer was to simply reset the pivot points. I exported it again, and this time when I imported back to Bryce only a few components were out of place, and even then were only displaced along the X axis--easy to fix.

How very strange. Because when i imported it everything was ok. The last thing i can think about is a co├Ârdinate difference between the max versions.

This is really mindboggeling. For some reason i can't get it right too. Another solution would be to just take the parts with the callsign and import it in Paul's origional mesh.

Long as we got it, that's what matters. I did wind up taking the displaced nacelle parts from the original mesh and then matching them up with yours, but take a look at the results:
Sovereign Fitzgerald II - 11.JPG
USS F Scott Fitzgerald, NCC-85107-B
I'm still working on the textures, but still, it looks great!

That's great! Same about the nacelles because they needed a lot of work. I didn't like the origionals because they have a lot of errors and i added a lot of smoothing. But go with what work and i'll figure it out later.

Now that I have a single ship for a size reference, I'll try exporting your rework to OBJ and seeing if I can use the nacelle parts from that. I don't think texture mapping will be an issue with those few parts.

No the entire nacelle is a planar map. But in max it is set as a mask.

Well like I said the only two pieces that I had to replace were the blue parts at the very top and the grille lines over them. Everything else was still yours.

Got an answer from Paul Trenkler about modifying the callsign on his model
Hi Ronald,

sure, no problem, I'm glad (and surprised) that even after ~10 years people still use the model :) As long as there's my name buried somewhere in the credits, it's ok.
Have fun!

Paul

See if everyone's okay with it appearing like this in the end credits:

Hahaha, whipped up some quick endcredits. LOLZ

I think it will be just fine. If it looks less strange you may add my real name Ronald Steenhorst.

^ Actually, I've been working on the end credits all along, to avoid a lengthy research process when production is complete. I made the mistake during both Specter and Retribution of leaving that for last, I didn't want to go through that again.
