this is the error i get

Well, in which case here's a little effect I whipped up. You'll need to scale it properly to suit your purposes and add a lens flare to any emitter you attach it too.

Past that, anyone know how to make a decent 'pulse phaser' effect for Lightwave like the one that's been made for Max on STMC?

I haven't given it a try before, but I imagine I'd use the same technique as I use for TIE fighter laser bolts, using particle emitters which have models or image mapped planes parented to them.

Personally I either do it in Photoshop, or apply a gradient to a plane and set the mapping to facing (or a similar option). You can then apply a glow or halo effect to the object. At least it works in Max.
