and, if you dont have lightwave, there's always the option of running a lightwave mesh through blender, and exporting it as a .obj file(with required .mtl, needed for proper loading of textures and other things related to a given mesh)
.obj files, are from what I've seen, the most universally compatible format.
now, I could be wrong on that last bit, but, you never know.
